Have you ever made scrapbooks, where you cut out articles or pictures from magazines and newspapers and paste them into a book?
Basically Clipclip is an online version of that: when you find something on the web, you can cut out only the most interesting part preserving the look and feel rather than bookmarking a bunch of links. We call these "clips" or "snippets" of a web page.
Good question! The answer depends on how you utilize our scissor tool and how much you cut out from the web page. If you use ClipClip to just bookmark links and not save any portion of the original page, then it's not too different from any another social bookmarking site.
Clipclip works the best when you cut a portion of the page, just like when making a scrapbook. Think of links as stashes of magazines. Clips or snippets of a web page are more like scraps and articles you cut out from magazine and keep them along with other scraps, so you don't have to keep stashes of magazines in piles. You don't have to look through every magazine to find the article that you thought interesting anymore, just cut them out and save it for your personal use, or put them in a group to show it to your group members. How you use the scissor is up to you, and there are many many possibilities.
Think of a clip as an online version of those old snippet of the newspaper, airline tickets or whatever scraps that you may have cut out to put on your fridge, save or send to friends.
A Clip is a part of a web page that you select using the Clipclip bookmarklet so that it can be shared and retrieved for later use. Clips can include anything - interesting text, a table of data, a picture, or an article that includes all these things. When you make a clip, it's easy to name it, add tags, and email it to friends.
The Clipclip bookmarklet is a link you add to your browser's bookmarks or favorites on the toolbar.
In order to use Clipclip, you need to add the bookmarklet to your browser. When you click this link, your browser clips the stuff that you have highlighted and opens a little application to help you name, group, and tag, and choose a picture for the clip.
Unlike many other tools, Clipclip is NOT a scary application or browser extention. Instead, instead it is a slick, safe "favorite" or "bookmark" link that you just drag to your browser. If you want, you can make Clipclip just a favorite in your favorite list. However, most people make the Clipclip bookmarklet a button on their browser toolbar. Click here for the instructions to get the button.
Think of Clipclip as just a habit as part of your normal web browsing experience... When you are using the web and find "stuff" (text, pictures, diagrams, entire pages) you want to clip, just select it (highlight it) using your mouse. Note, if you don't select anything before you click the Clipclip button on your Bookmarks Toolbar, the page is bookmarked.
Then, click the Clipclip bookmarklet button or link on your browser. The Clipclip bookmarklet widget should then pop up.
Next, enter information to name, group your clip in an activity, tag it with subordinate information, and choose a thumbnail image for the clip.
As a new user, you are taken to Clipclip after making the first clip. Once you click the link 'Next time, return me to original site instead of Clipclip' on the top of the page, you will stay on the page that you are clipping. We call this "clip and run."
Tags are another way to identify and organize clips. It is just like using a folder or a label but it's more flexible. You tag the clips as they are relevant to you so you can find them later. One clip can have one or as many tags as you want, separated by a space or a comma.
Tag Examples:
A recipe for Christmas dinner
Tags: christmas dinner recipe
An item you want to get for yourself
Tags: wishlist lcd tv
A moview you want to watch
Tags: action movie
Tags are an awesome way to search for clips you are interested in. If you do a search for recipe, you will see results from people who tagged their clips as recipe.
Contact is someone that you add to your list so you get to see their recent activities. It could be somebody who you think makes interesting clips that you would like to subscribe to, or it could be your friend to find out what they are up to. Once you add them to your list, we will always alert you on your homepage so you won't miss any comments or clips they have made.
If you know the contact's email, username, or the name that they signed up with, you can search for them and easily add to your contact list.
Currently we don't have a 'tell your friend about Clipclip' yet, but we are considering in the future. In the meantime, spread the word (e.g. by email or IM) and get your friends to clip with you!
