The words that are most often used to describe
this region are desolate, barren…Sublime!!.
Ladakh is easily the most rugged mountain region
of the Himalayas. Sandwiched between the Great Himalayan range and
the Tibetan Plateau, the average altitude here seldom falls below
3000 M, making it a fairly tough place for those unaccustomed to
the vagaries of Altitude.
Ladakh is also the land of High passes
Khardung la, Phitse la….the names go
on and on. Also of great fame is the remote Zanskar, an area that
until a decade ago was totally cut off from the main land.
Much has been said about this part of the world
and much more written, but little prepares you for its sheer
beauty.
The terrain is picture perfect.
The sandy desert blends into towering snow-clad
peaks. The trademark Gompas with their flags fluttering all over
the land brings a harmony that is omniscient.
