From humble beginnings as a no-brand retailler of fashion goods in
1983, Mujirushi Ryohin - or Muji, as it is better known - has grown
into an international chain offering good quality goods, from
pencils to duvets. In brand-obsessed Japan, the success of Muji (the name means 'no-brand goods') is an intriguing exception to the rule, and international shoppers used to the limited range of goods on offer at local versions of the chain are often surprised by the range of goods available at stores here in Japan. Nowhere is this more in evidence than at Muji's brand-new three-story flagship store in Yurakucho, where everything from make-up to stationery to washing machines, futons and no-brand hi-fis and televisions can be yours. In addition to the usual Muji shopping experience - steel racks of well-lit plain-colored goods in a minimal warehouse-style setting - the new store offers an extensive food corner. Here, create your own cereals from endless varieties or stock up on Muji beverages, snacks, spices, and sauces. Or power up at Meal Muji, a huge non-smoking dining area. Order veggies, fish and pasta sets (Y650) or build your own combo from the bakery, deli, and drink counter. In its latest incarnation, Muji remains modern, cool and, above all, affordable. Not something you can say about too many Japanese stores. by David Chester |
