The young man, John Spenn, had been chosen by the other students to offer a commencement address, and in it he challenged his fellow graduates to give of themselves unselfishly. Inspired by a speech he once heard, Spenn appropriated the professional designation DMD (Doctor of Medical Dentistry) for another meaning: "the dentist must die."
