      Bingo Goes Electronic

Never fear! For those who are unfamiliar with the world of online bingo, the amount of information on this classic and tradition-laden game is increasing every day.

Most of us have been exposed to bingo in some form; perhaps as a childhood pastime or in one of the numerous community center games operated by an organization. This game of chance is guided by a selection of random numbers on a card, with the word "BINGO" spelled out across the top. Numbers are drawn, usually from a tumbler that contains numbered balls. A player wins when he or she matches the called numbers in a specific pattern (straight line down, across etc.)

For decades, the game has been defined by dozens of players intently studying cards and physically marking them with buttons, chips and today, with colored markers. (The British/UK game is quite different and is often called "housie.")

With roots stretching back to the 16th century, bingo has become a huge business, bringing in hundreds, even thousands of dollars for church groups and charity organizations. Commercial bingo is offered at "brick and mortar" casinos in Nevada and on Native American property. But the game has also made the transition to the online world, changing the way many players participate. Some casinos and private organizations have even made use of electronic gaming by using programmable tickets.

While some may not be happy with the differences in online bingo, others will find the slightly quicker pace exciting. Traditionalists may miss the company of the group, the physical sensation of sitting at a table and hearing the numbers called. But most good online bingo software will have a "chat" feature. This option is similar to that offered by poker and other online casino games. It allows players to share thoughts and comments, usually by typing the text.

Oddly, many find online bingo easier to play even though the game seems quicker online. Bingo Web sites may offer a quick method of picking cards and a one-click process for buying cards. Some of the best sites will make adjustments to your array of multiple cards by automatically shifting your best card to a prominent position, such as upper left, where it is easiest to track.

It would be best if the player becomes somewhat familiar with the guidelines of a particular game before attempting to play online. However, just about everyone will find that Web site bingo is remarkably easy to understand. The game site will explain which pattern the player must mark off (up, down, diagonal etc.). Tip: Keep in mind that the winning pattern may not be a straight line, which most players are used to. This should be clearly indicated on the card. Of course, with online play, there is a "button" to click on to indicate "bingo!" Some games will have a set number of balls and the game ends even if there is no winner. Game creators have also added a few twists to the classic bingo game, including themes and characters that try to prevent players from being successful.
