The
Santa Barbara Amtrak station is located in central Santa Barbara,
only a few blocks from the beaches and promenades to the south
(Yes, south! The tracks run almost due east and west throughout
this portion of Santa Barbara!), and the historic and shopping
areas across the 101 Freeway.
Back in March 2002, Amtrak and Caltrans Rail Division, joined
with a a coalition of Santa Barbara organizations, to suggest that
it was possible to visit the Santa Barbara area without an
automobile. Thus, Car Free Santa Barbara was born! Santa Barbara
Car Free's web site is full of good reasons to travel to the area,
with discounts on lodging, dining, and information on tours,
events, and things to see and do without impacting local air or
traffic! Check their website <http://www.santabarbaracarfree.org>
for details.
And remember, to be car free in Santa Barbara,
be car free getting to Santa Barbara!
The station is served daily by Coast Starlight trains to
and from Los Angeles, Oregon and Washington, Amtrak California's
Pacific Surfliners to and from San Diego and Los Angeles,
with some trains extending north to San Luis Obispo, and Amtrak
Motor Coach service to the San Joaquin trains and to some
Pacific Surfliners.
The station is fully staffed, with ticketing, checked
baggage and package express service available.
The Santa Barbara Station underwent a rehabilitation and
reconstruction which was finished in 2000. The ticket office has
been restored to its original grandeur, plumbing, electrical,
heating and cooling systems have been updated, seating areas have
been restored. In addition, the parking lots and the adjacent
Railway Express Agency building were redone. It's definitely worth
a second look.
The new stop at Goleta
opened September 19, 1998. This stop does not replace Santa
Barbara, but does provide a more convenient stop for University of
California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) and north county residents.
