Tiger Update:

The installer package for Panther will work for Tiger as well. If you want to install a second installation of Ruby, you can use it for that. However, I would strongly reccommend just fixing Apple's installation this time, since they have the most recent stable version installed.

Sometime in the next week or so, I hope to put up an installer package that will repair the tiger installation. Until then, you can use the information on the Ruby on Rails site to get your Tiger Ruby install up to snuff.

Ruby stuff for Macs

Yet another update :) I put up two packages (look at the bottom of the page); Ruby 1.8.2 Stable for Panther, and, by popular demand, 1.8.2 Stable for Jaguar. Make sure you download the right one - the panther and jaguar versions will not run properly on the wrong operating system.

This package has some nifty things built in:

• Installs in /usr/local, so you can keep the original ruby install (in /usr)
• GNU Readline 5.0 (installed by default, but optional)
• Oniguruma (Ruby's shiny new regexp engine)
• TclTk works nicely (install TclTkAqua, links below)
• Rubygems and Rails (optional)
• RI documentation pre-made
• All sample code and Emacs support included!

To use your new intallation of ruby, add /usr/local/bin to the beginning of your path. To revert back to the older one, make sure that /usr/bin comes before /usr/local/bin in your path.

Note that you must make the change to your path, or you won't be able to use your new ruby installation. If you don't know how, or just want it done for you, paste this line into your terminal:

curl http://homepage.mac.com/discord/Ruby/set_path.rb | ruby

To install, click the download link and mount the disk image. Open "Ruby.mpkg" and follow the installation instructions. If you want the sample code and/or Emacs support files, copy the Extras folder to wherever you want to keep it :)

Before you can use TclTk, you need to install the TclTkAqua framework. Go to the TclTkAqua Sourceforge page and download the proper version for your operating system:

• Mac OS 10.3 Panther: version 8.4.9
• Mac OS 10.2 Jaguar: version 8.4.6.1

Overview and Introduction

Ruby/Google offers a higher-level abstraction of Google's SOAP-driven Web API. It allows the user to programmatically query the Google search-engine from the comfort of his or her favourite programming language, assuming that's Ruby.

The aim of the library is to shield the programmer from the details of the raw data structures returned by the Web API, and in the process make the API more accessible for everyday use.

The code is of beta quality and no more interface changes are anticipated at this time. You can view the CHANGES file for this release to see which new features were added and which changes made.

Demonstration programs are included in the archive.

Prerequisites

Before you will be able to use this software effectively, you will need to request a key from Google.

To successfully run the included demonstration programs, please store this key as ~/.google_key.

Google has made available a Web API archive containing sample code, an API reference and a WSDL definition file. Although none of these files are necessary in order to use Ruby/Google, you may find the API document a useful reference for determining what some of the more obscure parameters to the method calls are.

Dependencies

Ruby/Google currently requires SOAP4R 1.5.5 or later for its SOAP interface to the Google Web API. This is an integral part of Ruby 1.8.3 and 1.8.4.

Files

This page describes a method for installing RMagick, ImageMagick or GraphicsMagick, and the delegate libraries used by ImageMagick and GraphicsMagick. You only need to install one of ImageMagick or GraphicsMagick. The procedure is the same for either library. Throughout the remainder of this document I will use the word ×Magick to refer to either of these two libraries. I developed this procedure using Mandrake Linux. If you are using FreeBSD or a different Linux distro some of the details may be different. In particular these instructions assume you are using bash as your shell.
