After just three days behind bars, Paris
Hilton has been released from jail, officials announced early
Thursday.
After meeting with medical officials, Hilton
has been "fitted with an ankle bracelet and is confined to home for
40 days," said Steve Whitmire, spokesman for the Los Angeles
Sheriff's Department.
The Sheriff's Department held a
hastily-scheduled morning news conference at the Century Regional
Detention Facility in Lynnwood, where Hilton has been serving a
jail sentence since late Sunday. The heiress was caught in February
driving on a suspended license, a violation of her probation for an
earlier arrest for an alcohol-related reckless driving.
Hilton surrendered to officials late Sunday,
just hours after she was on the red carpet at the MTV Movie Awards.
She was expected to begin serving her time on Tuesday. Up until
Thursday morning, the inmate was still expected to be released June
26.
The Simple Life star, 26, was
sentenced to a 45-day jail sentence, which was expected to end up
being 23 days. The judge who sentenced Hilton specified that she
could not substitute work release, community service or home
detention for time behind bars.
